Museum ‘jammin’ open to all comers
While it seems like only yesterday when they started, the jam sessions at the Eunice Depot Museum have been going on for almost 15 years. And, if you missed any of those, here’s your chance to attend yet another.
This year’s annual session will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. on. It’s an opportunity to meet old friends, make new ones and learn a little of the music, culture and heritage of this unique part of the state.
Over the years, musicians young and old have attended. Some are seasoned players, others just learning.
It warms the heart to see an old man hand his treasured violin to young man in torn jeans and offer him to play. And to see parents bringing their small children, some to learn, some to listen.
One year, at the end of the day, we moved chairs and benches onto the porch, giving it more of an old “bal de maison” feeling and these two guys stopped by and watched for a while. They went to their car and returned with two outstanding instruments and joined in for the rest of the afternoon.
The “regulars” are always happy to take the time to explain anything you might ask.
The whole purpose of this event is to “pass it on”. Some much culture, so little time.
Anyone in the least bit interested is invited to attend. Bring your instrument. Ask the questions.
Or just sit around and marvel that so much talent lives in such a small out-of-the-way place as this.
Above all, be proud and take part.
Georgie Manuel.
