Unrestrained Iota driver dies when car hits tree, ejecting her
An unbelted Iota woman was killed Tuesday when her car left the road and hit a tree, ejecting her.
State Police said the accident happened about 11 a.m. on La. 91 north of here.
Preliminary investigation revealed the crash occurred as Claire Lejeune, 20, was traveling north in a 2000 Toyota Camry.
As Lejeune traveled northbound, she failed to maintain control of the vehicle causing it to run off the right side of the highway. Lejeune overcorrected, crossed both lanes of travel, ran off of the left side of the roadway and struck a tree.
Lejeune was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Lejeune sustained critical injuries and was transported by Air Med to a local hospital where she later died.
Alcohol is not suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash. Routine toxicology samples were taken from Lejeune and were submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
This crash remains under investigation.
