Chief says get out of car if you're pulled over
If pulled over by a police unit, do you get out of your vehicle or stay in?
Different law enforcement agencies have different preferences. In Eunice, in most instances, officers are being told to tell the driver to get out of his/her car and approach the police unit.
Chief Randy Fontenot noted at the City Council’s meeting last week that there is no set rule in the department, that it has been up to the officer involved. That is changing, he said.
Fontenot, and many law enforcement experts, believe having the driver get out is a safety issue for the officer, rather than having the officer approach a vehicle not knowing any circumstances he/she may be facing.
“In Eunice, we will expect the driver to get out,” Fontenot said, adding officers will give any other instruction needed.
The new chief’s review was at the behest of the Citizens Advisory Board, which has asked him to make a monthly procedure presentation at the council meeting, a request readily accommodated by the Mayor Rusty Moody.
