Platform, pews reflect city's diversity

More than 500 worshippers from at least 16 different churches squeezed into the First Baptist Church on Wednesday night for a Service of Christian Unity. There was a sense of a historic moment as the platform and the pew reflected the racial and denominational diversity and unity of Eunice. “I think many people pinched themselves wondering if this was really happening” said host pastor Tim Moffett.
The service was the vision of Monsignor Robert Romero of St Anthony’s Catholic Church who desired to see the traditional week of Christian unity extend beyond the city’s Catholic churches. Working with coordinating team of Pastor Woody Gunnels of New Hope Fellowship and Pastor Tim Moffett of First Baptist the number of participating churches grew as word spread.
A combined praise team led the enthusiastic congregation in worship that focused on the shared faith of the Christian community of Eunice. The choir of New Zion Baptist Church provided inspiration that brought the room to its feet. Pastor Gunnels brought the message that reminded his listeners they had to move beyond the walls of the church to meet the needs of our city. Several pastors prayed for our churches and our community. An offering of over $2700 was taken for the Eunice Community Food Bank.
“In the coming days, these churches will continue to hold their unique convictions and doctrines, but they will also know first hand that they are surrounded by brothers and sisters in Christ” said service worship leader David Harper. At the end of the service Monsignor Romero reflected, “obviously our community was ready for this service, we just opened the doors.”
