Blue Jays rally for win over Hornets
The Blue Jays came through in a pinch against Catholic High of Pointe Coupee.
Pinch runner John Hull slid in to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning and a defensive double play ended the game as St. Edmund grabbed a 5-4 win over the Hornets Thursday at Blue Jay Field.
With the win, St. Edmund improved to 16-5 on the season and 2-0 in District 5-1A.
“It is good to win a tough district game like that,” first-year head coach Scott Richard said. “It gives the kids a little confidence.
They came ready to play and they put pressure on us,” Richard said of the Hornets. “But our guys didn’t fold as we came back and got after it.”
The Blue Jays grabbed the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Jack Brown singled and pinch runner Hull moved around the bases when Cole Bergeron singled and then the Hornets threw the ball away during a rundown that allowed Hull to score.
Reliever Drew Brown then entered the game and walked Jacob Juge to open the frame.
But catcher Gibson LaFleur threw him out at second in a steal attempt.
LeMay singled up the middle, but Mason Crabtree hit into a game-ending double play.
Drew Brown also earned the complete-game win against the Hornets on Tuesday as he struck out seven, walked one and allowed three hits in the Blue Jays’ 7-0 victory.
In the earlier game, Gibson LaFleur went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored to spark the Blue Jay offense.
The Blue Jays scored a run in the top of the first when Ross LaFleur doubled and scored on another double by Drew Brown.
Catholic (7-17, 0-2) tied the game in the top of the second when catcher Landon LeMay doubled to left field and courtesy runner Lucas Patin scored on a passed ball.
The Hornets grabbed a 3-1 advantage in the top of the third when Jacob Juge was hit by a pitch and LeMay followed with a home run over the left field fence.
St. Edmund closed the gap to 3-1 in the bottom of the frame when Ross LaFleur reached on a error and later scored on a double steal.
Juge hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning to lift CHPC to a 4-2 advantage.
St. Edmund responded to force a tie in the bottom of the inning, aided by Gibson LaFLeur’s solo home run over left field.
Drake Brunet singled and scored on Jack Brown’s hit as the Blue Jays an inning later grabbed the lead.
St. Edmund will travel to False River Academy on Tuesday before facing the Gators at home on Thursday as district action continues.
