Be Curious About Books at Highland Elementary

In conjunction with the celebration of National Parental Involvement Day, Highland Elementary held a Book Talk Thursday afternoon.
The Book Talk event “Be Curious About Books!” involved Highland parents visiting the campus library.
They interacted with Pat Mason-Guillory, St. Landry Parish School Board Title I Parent Involvement coordinator, and Martha J. Ford, volunteer retired educator, about reading books, having conversations with their children, and asking questions about the book.
Two books, “Curious George” and “Wigglies Caterpillar” were discussed with Latissia Loran Mitchell, Mason-Guillory, and Melinda Atchison.
“It’s all about reinforcing reading and writing skills, and having a great conversation with your children. Read to your children. Let them explore and talk about what the book is all about,” said Mason-Guillory.
“Be Curious With Books” is about parents interacting with their child by reading, learning, and having a discussion.
Suggestions for parents to discuss as they read to their child, Mason-Guillory pointed out:
*Where does the story take place?
*When does the story take place?
*Who are the main characters in the story?
*Who is your favorite character in the story and why?
*Which picture in the book did you like best?
*Which part of the story you like best?
*Who is the author?
*Who is the illustrator?
