Qualifying for city races continues through Friday
Four people qualified to run for the expired term of mayor in the Eunice March 5 election.
Two people qualified to run for the Ward 4 Board of Alderman seat.
Qualifying opened at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Landry Parish Clerk of Court Office, Room 206 in the courthouse in Opelousas.
The qualifying fee for both offices is $150.
Qualifying continued from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today and resumes Friday.
Qualifying for mayor are:
— William “Mr. Bill” Thompson, Democrat, 411 Harold St.
— Roland Miller, Republican, 1220 Faris Ave. Eunice.
— “Tim” Longman, Republican, 1201 Yukon St. Eunice.
— Scott A. Fontenot, No party, 531 W. Park Blvd. Eunice.
Qualifying for alderman are:
— “Dale” Soileau, Democrat, 441 S. Sixth St. Eunice.
— James “Donnie” Fontenot, No party, 421 S. Fifth St. Eunice.
— Shantell Arredondo Ward, Republican, 1451 Scott St.
The seats were left open after former mayor Claud “Rusty” Moody Jr. died Nov. 3 less than year into his second term.
Scott Fontenot, Ward 4 alderman, was appointed by the Board of Alderman as interim mayor in a special session on Nov. 3.
Fontenot was serving his second term as an alderman.
Connie Thibodeaux was appointed by the Board of Aldermen to fill Fontenot’s seat.
The primary election for both positions is scheduled March 5, 2016, with an April 9 general election.
The winners will have about three years to serve until the next election.
Qualifying was also under way for party positions.
No one had qualified in the 41st Representative District for the Democratic State Central Committee seats.
There were no qualifiers for the 28th Senatorial District Republican State Central Committee seats.
Democratic candidates for president were: Hillary Clinton, New York, New York; Henry Hewes, New York, New York; Martin J. O’Malley, Baltimore, Maryland; “Bernie” Sanders, Burlington, Vermont; and Willie L. Wilson, Hazelcrest, Illinois.
Republican candidates for president were: “Jeb” Bush, Miami, Florida; “Ben” Carson, Alexandria, Virginia; “Chris” Christie, Morristown, New Jersey; “Carly” Fiorina, Alexandria, Virginia; Lindsey Graham, Columbia, South Carolina; “Mike” Huckabee, Little Rock, Arkansas; John R. Kasich, Columbus, Ohio; “Rick” Santorum, Verona, Pennsylvannia; and Donald J. Trump,New York, New York.
