Plane crashes near Basile, FAA called
No injuries were reported when this two-seater airplane crashed in a field at the western edge of Acadia Parish around noon on Saturday. Acadia Parish Sheriff’s officials said the pilot, Eric Chauvin of Baton Rouge, was headed for a landing strip at D.I.’s Restaurant and came up short, landing instead in a field of rye grass off Harry Doucet Road. A Baton Rouge pilot escaped injury when the small plane he was piloting flipped over in a field near Basile during landing just after noon Saturday.
According to Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office spokewoman Maxine Trahan, the pilot, identified as Eric Chauvin, 24, of the 400 block of Pasture View Road, was attempting a “cross-country solo” flight — a flight of more than 50 miles one way— and was planning to land on the airstrip at D.I.’s Restaurant on La. 97 along the western edge of Acadia.
“He landed in a field behind a home in the 100 block of Harry Doucet Road,” Trahan said. “There was some rye grass in the field and it was soft and he just flipped over.”
Trahan said Chauvin was walking around and refused medical treatment when officials arrived.
Because a plane is involved, Trahan said the Federal Aviation Administration was contacted and, as of Saturday, officials were on their way to the site.
“He was flying out of False River in the two-seater, headed for D.I.’s,” Trahan said. “He came up about 300 yards short. You could see D.I.’s from the site of the crash. He almost made it.”
