Rice planting around Eunice nearly complete
Rice planting around Eunice is almost done, said Brett Bruchhaus, location manager at G & H Seed Company in Eunice.
“Planting is about 65 to 70 percent done in the Eunice area,” Bruchhaus said. “It’s going, going. It’s been busy.”
Bruchhaus said rice seed sales have been steady since the first of the month.
David Myers was one of several farmers at G & H on Friday morning, and he and Daniel Crum, his farm hand, were purchasing levee curtains before heading out to place the curtains in his fields. Myers farms about 450 acres of rice six miles east of Eunice.
“It’s going very well,” Myers said. “I’m about halfway done. I started planting March 20, and I plan to be done by April 20.
“We plant by crop duster. I tried to plant dry, but I’ve had better luck with air.”
Myers said he hopes the season goes well, especially with the current price of rice.
“Prices are low, so we need to yield high,” he said.
