Genealogy Society meeting set for May 19
Lafayette Genealogical Society monthly meeting will be held Thursday, May 19 at the Lafayette South Regional Library, 6101 Johnston Street, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The guest speaker will be Becca Begnaud who will talk about Traiteurs and Acadiana Traiteur Traditions.

May public prayer
at St. Anthony’s
During the month of May a rosary and Divine Mercy chaplet will be prayed daily at 5:30 p.m. at the shrine of the Blessed Mother in front of Saint Anthony’s rectory.
The public is encouraged to participate.
Annual Postal carrier Food Drive May 14
Give and give.. to your postal letter carrier on Saturday, May 14. Your mail letter carrier will collect canned goods on this date. Mail customers will be receiving in the mail a post card reminder of the drive.
All canned goods donated will benefit the Eunice Food Bank.
EHS class of 2016- special brick offer
EHS Alumni Association is offering the senior class of 2016 a chance to purchase their brick at the high school’s Centennial Brick plaza, along with their lifetime membership into the Alumni Association for half price during the month of May.
For $50 between May 1 and June 1 any senior, or person buying one for an EHS senior of 2016, will receive a discount.

Opelousas Little Theatre “The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee”
The Opelousas Little Theatre will present the witty and humorous show “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”.
This unforgettable story covers how six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime.
The show features Michael Bourgeois, Angie McBride and Duncan McBride of Lawtell, James LeCompte of Arnaudville, Bradley Credeur, Taylor LaCalle and Kelly Schexnider of Lafayette, Melanie Soileau and Robert Soileau of Ville Platte and pianist, Susan Comeaux, of Crowley.
Director of the play is Angie McBride.
All performances will be held at the Opelousas Little Theatre in Opelousas South City Park at 7 p.m. May 5, 6 and 7.

Community Garden open hour Tuesdays
The Eunice Community Garden has scheduled open hours from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays to allow the community to learn about the opportunity to garden in a community setting.
“Jardin des Amis” is located at 2201 W. Ash St. and is behind the state Department of Motor Vehicles office.

Saturday program at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center
Saturday programs at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center, 250 W. Park Ave., Eunice, are the Explore & Restore craft workshop for kids, from 10 a.m. to noon; Cajun Conversations meets 1 to 2:30 p.m. to learn and practice conversational Cajun French; Music and dancing kicks off at 2:45 p.m. and ends with the cooking demonstration and sampling at 4 p.m. Admission to the center and programs is free.

Summer camp at Prairie Acadian Cultural Center
Summer Cultural Camp for the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve’s Prairie Acadian Cultural Center in Eunice is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 11 to 15.
The camp is for ages 9 to 12. The registration fee, cash or check is $50.
The center is located at at 250 West Park Ave., Eunice.

Step Outside Day at Sherburne WMA set
The 12th annual Step Outside Day, an outdoor education program hosted by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, will be held May 7 at Sherburne Wildlife Management Area in Lottie on the northern end of the Atchafalaya Basin from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event, which is free, will take place next to scenic Big Alabama Bayou near Sherburne WMA headquarters.
Some of the events planned for Step Outside Day include pontoon boat rides, canoeing, target and trap shooting, fishing and archery. Children can take part in blue bird box building, turkey and duck calling. All equipment will be provided.
Exhibits on the Louisiana black bear, other wildlife and fish species and water safety will be available.
Refreshments and lunch will be provided as well as drawings for door prizes. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
Mother’s Day cake sale May 7 & 8
There will be a Mother’s Day cake sale at St. Thomas More Catholic Church following Masses on Saturday, May 7 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, May 8 at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

North Eunice Baptist Yard Sale set May 7
North Eunice Baptist Church will have a fundraiser for their youth, a Yard Sale and Barbecue burger fundraiser, on May 7 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the church grounds, located on Hwy. 13 N., 2080 Veterans Memorial Hwy.,

The Eunice Bulb and Blossom Garden Club will meet at 5 p.m. May 9 at the residence of Coopey McDaniel for the end of year meeting.

Smart Drivers course set for May 12
There will be a Smart Drivers Course offered on May 12 from noon until 4 p.m. at the State Farm Office of Kendall Fontenot.
Refresh your defensive driving skills, review traffic laws and rules of the road using proven safety strategies as well as have the opportunity to perhaps receive a multi-year discount on your insurance. No test to pass.
Cost of the class is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members.

VFW bingo held Thursdays, Sundays
The VFW Post 8971 holds bingo for the public at 7 p.m. every Thursday and Sunday at the VFW Hall located on U.S. 190 East. All proceeds from Bingo games goes back to the community.
