Bobcats remain undefeated in Metro play
The Eunice Bobcats took an early lead and never surrendered it in coasting to a 14-5 victory over the Church Point Bears in Acadiana Metro League action Monday evening at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats, 3-0 in league play, trailed 1-0 after one inning before scoring six runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 6-1 lead. The Cats added four runs in the third and four more in the fifth to take control of the game.
With one out in the second, Tyler Darbonne drew a walk and Zac Guillory reached safely on a fielders’ choice to put runners at first and second. Jaden Brasseaux was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ian George and Jonas Granger followed with singles and Gunner Fontenot drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.
Two errors by the Bears aided the Cats’ six-run frame.
Two more errors by the Bears in the third inning aided the Cats in scoring four runs. Fontenot’s two-run single highlighted the Bobcat offense in the inning.
Starting pitcher Darbonne kept the Bears in check through his four innings on the mound. Darbonne allowed two hits and one earned run. He walked two and struck out three before being relieved by Austin Manuel in the fifth inning.
Manuel would work the final three innings, giving up two hits, one earned run, and recording two strikeouts.
The Bears cut the Bobcat lead to 10-5 with a single run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth. But the Cats answered back with four runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Darbonne, Manuel, and Fontenot had run-scoring singles in the inning.
Fontenot led the Cats offensively, going two for three with four RBI.
EHS 9, Beau Chene 8
Eunice scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim a 9-8 victory over the Beau Chene Gators in baseball action Tuesday evening at Bobcat Field.
The Gators, playing independent of the Acadiana Metro League, surged to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first two innings off Eunice starting pitcher Gunner Fontenot, who was relieved by Brandon Martel. Martel would work three-and one-third innings, allowing four hits, four runs (only one earned) and striking out four.
The Cats scored their first run in the second inning Austin Manuel singled and later scored on a groundout by Jaden Brasseaux. After the Gators added a fifth run in the top of the third inning, the Cats added another run in the bottom of the inning. Jonas Granger singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tayte Langley to cut the lead to 5-2.
The Gators responded with three runs in the fifth inning, led by a Beau Louvierre double, to increase their lead to 8-2.
The Bobcats took advantage of walks to Ian George and Austin Phillips in the bottom of the fifth inning to score both runners on two-run single by Fontenot to cut the lead to 8-4. The Cats added a single run in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 8-5 as Tyler Darbonne walked, advanced to second on a single by Manuel and later scored on a wild pitch.
Bobcat reliever Ian George kept the Gators at bay over their final two innings, striking out five and walking one. His teammates would reward his work by scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
With one out, Fontenot reached on an error. Kameron Givens and Josh Youngblood followed with singles to score Fontenot. Langley reached safely when hit by a pitch before Darbonne drove home Givens with a sacrifice fly. Both runners advanced into scoring position on the throw to the plate. Manuel ended the game with a two-run single to give the Bobcats a 9-8 victory.
