Police chief urges safety as school starts
By Harlan Kirgan Editor

As school starts this week, Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot offered safety advice at Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen’s meeting.
But just in case people are inclined to ignore the advice, Fontenot reminded motorists police are watching.
“We will be concentrating on patroling in the school zones during school traffic time from 7 to 9 in the mornings and 2 to 4 in the afternoons,” Fontenot said. “You will see extra police presence in those school zones.”
Motorists are required to stop at least 30 feet away from school buses when they turn on flashing lights and stop signs, he said.
In some school zones, talking on a cell phone is prohibited, he said. Motorists should look for signage prohibiting cell phone use.
And, texting is not allowed anywhere, he said.
Fontenot also advised against talking on a cell phone when driving, although it is not illegal.
The police chief added, “I just wish we had the money to bring back the school crossing guards because I think they helped a lot.”
Fontenot also reported the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign begins Aug. 18 and runs through Sept. 5.
The campaign allows extra officers on the patrol to target impaired drivers, he said.
