The quarterly TRIAD Senior Citizens safety and health workshop, sponsored by the St. Landry Sheriff department, was held Wednesday at the Eunice VFW Post 8971 Hall. A large crowd of seniors attended the workshop, enjoyed a luncheon of barbecue chicken, jambalaya, cole slaw and a soft drink.
They had the opportunity to play games of bingo, listened to guest speakers, won door prizes, and visited health care vendors.
Seniors also had the opportunity to listen to a live band, “Glenn, A Band Of One,” from Breaux Bridge, and some danced a “jig” on the floor.
Some of the health care vendors that provided free health information included Opelousas General Health Systems, LHC Group-1st Option, Community Medical Research, Serenity Home Care, Louisiana SMP Preventive Health Care, Well Care, St. Joseph Hospice and Eunice Community Home Health.
TRIAD is an agreement between the National Sheriff’s Association, International Association of Chief’s of Police and the American Association of Retired Persons. “It was implemented to protect our senior citizens through activities that inform them of the latest fraud and scam’s tactics,” said Maj. Eddie Thibodeaux, public information officer for St. Landry Parish Sheriff.
In April of 1994 St. Landry Sheriff’s Office, A.A.R.P. and 10 municipal chiefs of police in St. Landry Parish signed the first TRIAD agreement. St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office spearheaded the TRIAD by sponsoring the crime prevention workshops.
A workshop is a full day of information on fraud, identity theft, drugs awareness, personal safety, and other safety issues concerning our senior citizens. Workshops are held all over the parish to reach all of senior citizens. Groups average around 250 during the workshops and 600 to 700 at the TRAID Christmas party in December.
“After the workshops our guests are treated to free lunch with all the trimmings. The workshop also includes door prizes from area merchants ranging from home decorations, personal items, to security equipment. The day is completed with games of bingo for more prizes,” Thibodeaux said.
