Former LSU AD
BATON ROUGE – Services will be Wednesday for former LSU Athletic Director Joe Dean. He died Sunday at age 83.
He led LSU athletics from 1987 to 2000. He was a former all-SEC basketball player at the university and was a member of the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. As a SEC basketball analyst on television, he became known as “Mr. String Music.”
Medical pioneer
NEW ORLEANS – Services for surgeon and African American academic medicine pioneer Dr. Mitchell Spellman will be Saturday. He died Nov. 11 at age 93.
He was a thoracic surgeon. He was chief medical officer at DC General Hospital for Howard University, assistant dean and professor of surgery at UCLA, dean for medical services at Harvard Medical Center and director of academic alliances and international exchange programs for Harvard Medical International.
Survivors include his wife Billie and six children.
Former council president
LAFAYETTE – Arrangements for business woman and public official Janice Heymann are under direction of Martin & Castille. She died at age 63.
She served two terms as president of the Lafayette City Council.
Survivors include her mother.
Long-time minister
PINEVILLE – Services were Saturday for Assembly of God minister the Rev. Robert Hearne. He died Nov. 11 at age 69.
He was pastor of First Assembly of God, Pineville for 34 years and pastor emeritus of First Assembly of God, Presbyter for 13 years. He was on the national board of Evergreen Ministries.
Survivors include his wife Patsy and three children.
Pediatrician
BOSSIER CITY – Services for pediatrician Dr. Dennis Smith will be Tuesday. He died at age 65.
He was director of pediatrics at EA Conway Hospital in Monroe for 35 years.
Survivors include his wife Johnette, two sons and a daughter.
Arrangements are by Rose-Neath.
LSU Vet School official
BATON ROUGE – Services for former LSU Vet School official Sallie Knight will be Monday. She died Nov. 16 at age 79.
She retired as coordinator of student affairs at the School of Veterinary Medicine and as a senator with the LSU Staff Senate. Her family owned Babington’s Drug Store in Franklinton.
Survivors include her husband Wayne and three children.
Civil Rights icon
BATON ROUGE – Arrangements are pending for civil rights icon the Rev. T.J. Jemison. He died Nov. 15 at age 95.
He was known for organizing a 1953 Baton Rouge bus boycott that later served as a nonviolent protest model for the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Montgomery, Ala.
Arrangements are by Hall Davis and Son.
Exterminator
LAFAYETTE – Services for pest control operator Owen Provost will be Monday. He died Nov. 14 at age 79.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. He was owner and operator of Dugas Pest Control of Lafayette and Baton Rouge for many years.
Survivors include his wife Eva, a daughter and four step-children.
School Board member
PLAQUEMINE – Services for long-time Iberville Parish School Board member Thomas “Tiny” Edwards werel be Saturday. He died Nov. 9 at age 71.
He was a board member for 33 years. He owned Edwards Vacuum Service and Labor Crews.
Survivors include his wife Ethel and three children.
