Black Magic grabs lead in LSUE Fall World Series

 

The LSU Eunice baseball team continued its annual Fall World Series on Wednesday night, with the Black squad grabbing a third-consecutive win with a 7-4 victory to take a 3-2 series advantage. 

 

Freshman Zach Hamilton did not factor into the decision despite tossing five innings, allowing four hits, two runs and three walks while striking out three batters.

 

Fellow freshman Evan Kissinger earned the win with three innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit and one unearned run with a strikeout and two walks. 

 

Sophomore Derek Herrington led the Black squad at the plate with a 3-for-6 night with two runs scored, while freshman Bobby Schuman 1-for-2 with two runs scored and drove home two RBI.

 

 Gold team starter Nick Lawrence finished four innings, allowing two hits, one unearned run and three walks while striking out three batters, but the freshman did not factor into the decision.

 

Sophomore reliever Ryan Domingue was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) in just 1 1/3 innings of work. 

 

Sophomore Stefan Trosclair paced the Gold squad with a 3-for-4 night, driving home an RBI and stealing a base, while freshman Ralphie McDonald added two hits of his own with two runs scored and a stolen base. 

 

The series has an off day on Thursday before the Black squad looks to wrap up the series on Friday night at 6 p.m. at Bengal Stadium.

Black 3, Gold 2

The LSU Eunice baseball team's annual Fall World Series is all knotted at 2-games each after the Black squad grabbed a 3-2 win on Tuesday night for their second victory in as many nights.

“We have seen some guys step up that we hadn’t during the fall season,” LSUE head coach Jeff Willis said. “We have also seen both

teams play with energy and emotion, which we had spurts of during the fall season, but were very inconsistent  

“We are moving in the right direction and look forward to the remaining games.”

Sophomore Chad Reeves earned the win after five innings of work, allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out seven Gold batters. Back in the opening game of the series, Reeves did not factor in the decision despite a nine-strikeout night.

Sophomore Ray Veit paced the Black offense with a 3-for-4 night, as fellow sophomore Kyle St. Pierre added a hit and RBI.

Freshman Nick Hartman took the loss for the Gold squad after giving up eight hits, three runs (two earned) and three walks in his second start of the series. 

Redshirt freshman Paul Carpenter tossed three innings in relief for the Gold team, allowing just one hit and one walk while strikeout out a pair of Black batters. 

At the plate, freshman Ralphie McDonald finished the night 2-for-5 with two stolen bases and a run scored for the Gold squad, while sophomore Stefan Trosclair and freshman Montana Garcia each notched two hits in the loss.

With the series tied at 2-2, Game Five of the series comes tonight at 6 p.m. at Bengal Stadium.

Black 9, Gold 8

The Black team grabbed its first win in the series with a comeback 9-8 victory on Monday night.

 

Down to their final out, the Black squad plated two runs with two outs in the top of the ninth. Sophomore newcomer Bobby Schuman’s RBI base hit tied the game before sophomore Kyle St. Pierre delivered the go-ahead run with his RBI hit moments later.

 

On the mound, the Black team saw its pitchers strike out 14 Gold batters, with sophomore Ben LeBlanc earning the win after tossing three innings and allowing just one hit while striking out four.

 

Freshman Hayden Marze finished the night off in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save for the Black squad, while Ryan Domingue was saddled with the loss after allowing the two runs in the top of the frame. 

 

St. Pierre led the Black offense, finishing the night 3-for-4 with a run scored and driving in the eventual winning run. Freshman Brennan Bozeman collected two hits and an RBI of his own while scoring twice for the Black squad as well.

 

Down 2-1 in the series, the Black team will look to build off the comeback win while the Gold squad will try to take a commanding lead when the series continues on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Bengal Stadium.

Gold 7, Black 2

The Gold team grabbed a 7-2 win Saturday night to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Freshman Nick Lawrence earned the win for the Gold squad, as the right-hander struck out eight Black team batters and allowed just four hits and one run in his four innings of work.

Fellow freshman Sam Walley recorded four of his six outs via the strikeout in his two innings of work out of the bullpen, giving up one hit and a walk.

Ralphie McDonald led the Gold offense with a 4-for-5 night at the plate, connecting on a double while driving home two RBIs and scoring twice. Tyler Chapman notched his second two-hit game in as many nights, tallying two RBIs on Saturday to follow up on his 2-for-4, three RBI night on Friday in game one.

Freshman Will Trahan collected two hits of his own for the Gold team while scoring a run, while redshirt freshman Nick Artall added two hits and an RBI with his run scored.

Black Team starter Zack Hamilton was saddled with the loss after the freshman allowed seven hits, four runs and three walks in his four innings of work.

Brennan Bozeman paced the Black team at the plate, as the freshman finished the night 3-for-4 with a double.

Gold 1, Black 0

The series kicked off on Friday night, with the Gold team taking a 1-0 lead with a commanding 9-1 victory.

A pair of team captains were in the middle of the action, as sophomore Tyler Chapman drove home three RBIs for the Gold team while fellow sophomore Chad Reeves did not factor into the decision despite striking out nine batters after getting the start on the mound for the Black team.

Chapman paced the Gold squad with a 2-for-4 night at the plate with a home run to go with his three RBIs.

Freshman starter Nick Hartman did not factor into the decision after tossing four innings for the Gold team, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out three batters.

Fellow newcomer O.J. Latin earned the win, pitching three hitless innings and striking out three batters.

Freshman reliever Hayden Marze was saddled with the loss for the Black team, allowing six runs and walking five batters despite only allowing one hit in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Reeves struck out nine hitters in his four innings of work, allowing just one hit while walking three and taking the no decision.

Sophomore transfer Bobby Schuman led the Black team at the plate, tallying two hits, including a triple, and scoring the team’s lone run.
