Lady Bengals sweep on Sophomore Day
The top-ranked Lady Bengals grabbed a 2-1, 8-0 sweep over Baton Rouge Community College as LSU Eunice celebrated Sophomore Day on Sunday.
The Lady Bears (4-31) jumped out to an early lead when Nicole Vosburg doubled to left and scored on an error.
The Lady Bengals (44-4) tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Destin Vicknair launched a home run over the right field fence.
After three scoreless innings, LSU Eunice grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth as Abigail Ohlin reached on an infield single and scored when Taylor Boulet reached on an error.
Raven Cole earned the win as she struck out 11, walked four and allowed one earned run on three hits.
Destiny Holmes suffered the loss as she struck out three, walked two and allowed one earned run on four hits.
Vicknair went 2-for-2 with a walk, a RBI and a run scored, while Ohlin (1-for-3, run scored) and catcher Katie Flowers (1-for-3) collected the other two Lady Bengal hits.
In the finale, LSU Eunice exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second as the Lady Bengals cruised to the five-inning mercy-rule win.
The Lady Bengals scored in dramatic fashion in the first inning as Maddie Edmonston laid down a bunt and then took advantage of several errant throws to race around the bases for a 1-0 lead.
Vicknair later followed with a double and scored when Carmisha Payton reached on an error.
The Lady Bengals pushed further ahead in the bottom of the second, begun as Alli Daigle singled, Ohlin was hit by a pitch and Edmonston tripled to centerfield and advanced to give LSU Eunice a 4-0 lead.
Boulet was hit by a pitch and Vicknair then belted her second home run of the doubleheader to push the Lady Bengals ahead, 7-0.
LSU Eunice added an insurance run in the bottom of the third frame when Jaci Lavigne doubled and scored on Ohlin’s single to left field.
Vicknair earned the win as she struck out eight, walked two and allowed two hits over three innings.
Kayla Davidson pitched the final two innings as she struck out one, walked one and allowed two hits in the shutout.
Edmonston went 2-for-2 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored, while Vicknair went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Danielle Cruickshank went 1-for-2, while Daigle went 1-fof-2 with a run scored and Ohlin went 1-for-1 with a RBI and a run scored.
Sophomores Camille Quebodeaux, Boulet, Davidson, Ohlin, Alexa Thibodeaux, Cruickshank, Ginny Daggett, Flowers, Vicknair, Cole and Amanda Lassus were honored prior to the opener against the Lady Bears.
The Lady Bengals are scheduled to close the regular season at home on Wednesday against Alvin Community College.
