Blue Jays clip Bearcats

BASILE – St. Edmund scored on a two-point conversion in double ovetime as the Blue Jays earned a 29-28 win over Basile in the regular season finale.
In the second overtime, on third-and-goal from the Bearcat 1, Jack Miller picked up the fumbled snap and pushed his way into the endzone.
Luke Doucet then scored the game-winning two-point conversion.
“I would like to say it was a genuis call,” St. Edmund head coach Andy Hargroder said of the two-point play. “Our seniors wanted us to go for two.
“They were 0-3 to Basile until tonight,” Hargroder said. “It was great to get the win, epecially for the seniors.
With the game tied 21-21, it took Basile just one play to score to open the second extra period when Rashawn Murphy made a circus catch of Dawson Ashford’s pass for a 10-yard touchdown.
Jacob Guillory kicked the PAT to give Basile a 28-21 advantage.
St. Edmund scored to open the first overtime when Doucet scored on fourth down from two yards out.
Jack Brown’s PAT gave the Jays a 21-14 advantage.
Basile answered when Ashford found Murphy open for a 5-yard touchdown.
Guillory’s PAT tied the game 21-21 and forced another overtime.
Basile had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Abdul Mingo’s 33-yard field goal fell just inches short of the crossbar as time expired.
Trailing 14-6 early in the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays moved 70 yards with nine running plays capped by a 1-yard plunge by Peter Miller.
In a foreshadowing of the overtime play, Brad Miller ran the ball in for the two-point conversion as the Blue Jays tied the game 14-14 with 6:00 left in the fourth period.
After a scoreless first quarter, St. Edmund had a seven-play drive, aided by a fourth-down run by Peter Miller to keep the series alive at the Bearcat 21.
On the second play of the second quarter, Doucet broke for a 13-yard touchdown.
The kick hit the goal post and the Jays lead, 6-0 with 11:21 left in the first half.
After Basile was forced to punt, Dagen Lejeuene recovered a Blue Jay fumble and the Bearcats moved 20 yards in five plays,
On fourth down, the Jays were flagged for roughing the quarterback and then Ashford found Murphy open in the end zone for a 9-yard score.
Guillory’s PAT gave the Bearcats a 7-6 lead with 7:14 left before intermission.
Defense ruled the third period before Basile’s Jacob McGee blocked and recovered a Blue Jay punt at the St. Edmund 23.
On the very next play, Ashford hit Murphy for the score and Guillory’s PAT gave Basile a 14-6 advantage with 1:45 remaining in the third period.
The LHSAA will release playoff brackets today.
St. Edmund is presently No. 13 in Division IV and Basile is No. 16 in Class 1-A.
