Blue Jays grab win over Gators
It was a great way to open the playoffs and put the past behind them.
The Blue Jays entered the post season on a five-game losing streak, including a 8-6 loss to district 5-1A foe False River Academy.
In the game that extended their season, No. 7 St. Edmund (18-8) grabbed a 4-0 win over the No. 26 Gators (5-18) on Friday at North Park..
“It is always tough playing some one from your district in the playoffs,” St. Edmund head coach Scott Richard said. “We know each other well. But I tell our kids if we play our game, we are hard to beat.”
Senior Drew Brown struck out 10, walked one and allowed three hits in the complete-game shut-out win.
“Drew threw such a good game that he gave our hitters confidence,” Richard said.
“He has shown what he can do this year,” Richard said of Brown. ““We have other arms who are ready, but we will go as far as Drew can carry us.”
St. Edmund beat FRA 8-2 in their first meeting as Brown struck out seven, walked two and allowed two runs on four hits.
The Blue Jays will entertain No. 10 Christian Life (15-11,) 7-3 winners over Metairie Park Country Day.
The regional round game could be played on Tuesday.
Brown struck out the first five batters before giving up a walk.
Konner Jones dropped in a single in the top of the fourth, while David Leonard singled in the third and doubled in the fifth for the only Gator hits.
St. Edmund grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third frame when Ross LaFleur singled and scored as Will Chachere singled and an errant throw went into the Blue Jay dugout.
The Jays exploded for three runs in the bottom of the fourth, begun when Jack Brown and Austin Sittig earned back-to-back walks.
LaFleur ripped a two-out double to centerfield to drive in two runs.
Chachere followed with a single to plate LaFleur and push the Jays ahead, 4-0.
LaFleur and Chachere both went 2-for-4 to lead the Blue Jays.
Last year, the Blue Jays opened the playoffs with a 7-5 win over CLA before falling 12-2 in the
regionals to Central Catholic of Morgan City.
In 2013, the Blue Jays lost the playoff opener 9-0 to Oak Grove.
In 2012, St. Edmund beat St. Martin 10-0, but Oak Grove ended the Blue Jays’ season in a 8-6 heartbreaker.
