Bobcats brace for Bulldogs

By Tom Dodge

Eunice High opened the season with a 34-6 win over Opelousas as the Bobcats limited the Tigers to 120 yards of total offense.
The task for EHS will get much tougher this week as the rival Jennings Bulldogs visit Bobcat Field.
Jennings running back Travis Etienne gained 176 yards rushing on 13 carries and scored twice as the Bulldogs stunned Kinder, 34-0.
“He gained 2,000 yards so you know he will get his yards,” Eunice head coach Paul Trosclair said of Etienne. “We want to limit him, but as a team they also have a lot of weapons.”
Special teams play gave the Bulldogs its first points as Darrian Achane took a Kinder punt back 85 yards for a touchdown with 34 seconds left in the first quarter.
Etienne later ran for the first of his two touchdowns from 10 yards out.
Etienne became the all-time leading rusher in Jennings history, surpassing the 54-year old record set by former Bulldog and LSU great Ken Cormier in 1962.
With just over five minutes left in the third quarter, Etienne added an 89–yard touchdown run and Kendrick Lejeune scored to push the Bulldogs ahead 27-0 lead with 7:04 left in the game.
Achane added a 45 yard touchdown run to seal the win.
Each of Kinder’s four turnovers – three fumbles and threw one interception – resulted in point for Jennings.
“They are much improved on defense from last year obviously,” Trosclair said of the Jennings defense.
“When you beat the defending Class 2-A state champions by 34 points that will get any one’s attention.”
The Bulldog defense was impressive as A.J. Hall was limited to 44 yards on 13 carries and Johnson was held to 36 yards on nine carries.
Trent Johnson went 8 of 10 passing for 125 yards with the one interception.
Senior Travon Williams led all Yellow Jackets receivers with 77 yards on three catches.
“The key will be our offense,” Trosclair said. “We need to make things happen as we have to make their scores.
“We want to scored enough to keep the game tight and give us a chance to win.”
In the win over OHS, Eunice running back Avery Lee gained 98 yards on 18 carries and scored three times in the Bobcats’ 34-6 win over Opelousas High.
Lee scored on runs of 9, 1 and 5 yards.
Bobcat quarterback quarterback Jaden Brasseaux completed 10-of-20 passes for 107 yards.
Eunice outgained OHS, 316 to 120 yards of total offense.
“I like the aggresiveness of this team and the physical nature of the group,” Trosclair said.
“We need to eliminate mistakes and play well against Jennings,” he said. “We have a lot of things to throw at them on offense.
“Hopefully we can execute them.”
