Bobcats down Wolves

LAFAYETTE – The Eunice High Bobcats improved their District 4-4A record to 7-2 with a 6-2 victory over the Rayne High Wolves Friday afternoon at UL-Lafayette’s “Tige” Moore Field.
Coach Scott Phillips’ Bobcats took an early lead with a three-run first inning against Hunter Meche, the starting pitcher for the Wolves. Gunner Fontenot reached base when he was hit by a pitch to start the game. A sacrifice bunt by Logan Manuel moved Fontenot to second base. Fontenot advanced to third on a single by Jordan Comeaux and scored on a double off the bat of Wes Hebert.
Alex Sonnier continued the inning with an infield single, with Comeaux scoring on a wild throw to first base. Hebert later scored on a sacrifice fly by Christian Lejeune.
Lejeune, the Bobcat starting pitcher, retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the first, but was touched for a single by Hunter Keely and a double by Grant Abshire to cut the lead to 3-1. Abshire was thrown out by Fontenot on a steal attempt to end the inning.
The Cats added a run in the third inning as Hebert drew a walk and advanced to third on two wild pitches. He would score when Caleb Taylor reached safely on an error, giving the Cats a 4-1 lead. The Cats made it 5-1 with a run in the top of the fifth. Hebert opened the inning with a triple into right-center field and scored on Sonnier’s sacrifice fly.
The Wolves added a run of their in the bottom of the fifth as Blaine Meche doubled and eventually scored on a groundout by Ivy Thibodeaux. But that would be the last run allowed by Lejeune, who scattered four hits, walked one, and struck out two.
The Cats added a run in the sixth as cushion for their lefty pitcher. Cade Richard was hit by a pitch, stole second base, and scored on an error.
The Bobcats played errorless ball, with Comeaux making several exceptional plays at third base. He finished with six assists on defense. Manuel added a diving catch of a fly ball down the right-field line for the first out in the bottom of the seventh. Richard and Alec Trosclair both made outstanding plays of their own at shortstop and second base, respectively.
The Bobcats, now 15-8 overall, are scheduled to play LaGrange on Monday in Sulphur. The Cats will celebrate Senior Day on Tuesday as they entertain the Crowley Gents before traveling to Beau Chene on Thursday to complete their district schedule.
