Bobcats look to rebound against Tigers

By Tom Dodge

The Bobcats are hoping to regroup after a 40-27 loss to Jennings, but the task won’t get any easier as Eunice takes on undefeated St. Martinville Friday.
‘They had speed and talent in all the right places,” Eunice head coach Paul Trosclair said of Jennings. “They caused us a lot of problems.
Eunice allowed Jennings to roll up 433 yards on the ground as the Bulldogs finished with 534 yards of total offense.
Travis Etienne had 147 yards on 16 carries with three touchdowns.
Kendrick Lejeune added 155 yards on seven carries.
“We were hoping to get to the fourth quarter with it close, but we gave up a touchdown at the end of the half that put us behind (20-13).”
The Bulldogs outscored the Bobcats 19-14 in the scond half.
Eunice’s Avery Lee gained 160 yards on 22 carries with a 1-yard touchdown run in the Bobcats’ 40-27 loss to Jennings.
Lee also connected with Georrein Dupre for a 28-yard touchdown.
Class 4-A’s St. Martinville opened the season with wins over Jeanerette (40-8) and Assumption (13-8).
St. Martinville went 1-9 in 2014 and 6-4 last season, so the Tigers are improving under former Northside head coach Vincent Derouen.
The Tigers have two talented players to lead the offense in quarterback Jared Davis and wide receiver Deantre James.
Dylon Doucet is another dynamic receiver to work with on the outside.
Backing up Davis is Markavon Williams, a talented sophomore.
“Their quarterback can both run and throw,” Trosclair said. “So with their power running and the ability to throw it deep, we will be challenged on defense.
“We need to be able to keep plays in front of us.”
The Assumption offense struggled to get anything going against St. Martinville as the Mustangs’ only touchdown on a 60-yard punt return from Melvin Young.
Assumption was leading 8-7 with two minutes left, but fumbled deep in its own territory and the Tigers then scored the game-winning touchdown.
“We can’t give up the big play,” Trosclair said. “We can’t turn the ball over.
“We are asking a lot of our offense until we can get better on defense,” the coach said. “But I think they can come through with points.”
