Bobcats stun Tigers, 20-16

By John Burson

The Eunice High Bobcats scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to rally past the St. Martinville High Tigers for a 20-16 victory in non-district football action at Bobcat Stadium.
The Bobcats dominated the early going of the contest driving from their own 20 on a 14-play drive before failing to convert a fourth down at the Tigers’ 12-yard line.
The Bobcat defense forced a punt on St. Martinville’s first possession, giving the Cats the football at their own 25 after Georrein Dupre’s 15-yard punt retrun.
The Bobcats drove 75 yards in 12 plays to score on a Jaden Brasseaux touchdown pass to Jordon Ledet for seven yards.
The PAT kick failed, but the Cats held a 6-0 lead.
The Tigers responded with a 56-yard touchdown of their own after Dylan Doucet’s 29-yard kickoff return set them up at their own 44.
The Tigers tied the score with 7:10 remaining in the half on a one-yard run by Deantre James. A poor snap on the PAT try kept the Tigers from taking the lead and the half ended with the game tied at 6-6.
The second half began with the Bobcat pinning the Tigers back deep in their own territory, forcing a punt from the Tigers’ 20.
The Cats blocked the punt, taking over the ball inside the 10-yard line of the Tigers. But the Tigers held the Cats out of the end zone and a field goal attempt failed.
A key play of the game occurred late in the third quarter when quarterback Jared Davis was intercepted by Eunice’s Dashawn Vigers deep inside Eunice territory. Vigers fumbled the ball but recovered it and took the ball 70 yards to the 10-yard line. Three personal foul penalties gave the Cats the ball at the one-yard line and Trevin Ceasar’s four-yard touchdown run and a PAT kick from Austin Phillips put the Cats on top 13-6.
The lead didn’t hold up for long as Davis led the Tigers down the field with his arm, capping a 68-yard drive with a handoff to James for a touchdown with 9:32 left in the game. Jace Patin kicked the PAT to tie the game at 13-13..
The Cats lost a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, but the defense held the Tigers to a field goal attempt, Patin nailed the field goal from 45 yards to put the Tigers back on top at 16-13.
The Bobcat offense then took control at their own 37 after a 16-yard return by Vigers. Behind the running of Avery Lee, who carried six times for 31 yards, the Cats gaced a third-and-goal from the four-yard line.
Ceasar scored and Phillips booted the PAT to put the Cats ahead 20-16 with 2:44 left in the game.
The Bobcat defense made the lead stand up, stopping the Tigers on a fourth-and-12 and taking a knee twice to end the game.
