Hebert ready for next challenge

By John Burson

Dealing with a foot injury he sustained near the end of Eunice High School’s football season, senior Wesley Hebert knew that hard work was ahead of him to get ready for the start of the Bobcat baseball season.
“It was tough going through the wait to get healthy,” said Hebert in a recent interview. “But I had a lot of support and encouragement behind me from family, coaches, and players”.
Hebert’s work ethic paid off as he was in the starting lineup in the Bobcats’ opening game against Jennings, driving in the Cats lone run in a 7-1 loss to the Bulldogs.
Hebert went on to earn All-District and All-State honors as an outfielder in Class 3A, helping the Bobcats to a 26-7 record.
He was also named to the Lafayette Daily Advertiser All-Acadiana Team and to the Acadiana Advocate’s All-Metro Team.
Hebert recently added another honor to his resume, being selected to the All-USA Today Louisiana Baseball Team.
Players were selected based on their athletic achievement from the 2016 season.
Familiar names joining Hebert on the team included Barbe pitchers Alan Goree and Tyler Booth, South Beauregard pitcher Logan Savoy, infielder Michael Smith of St. Michael, and Lafayette High’s Hudson LaBorde.
Hebert completed his season with a .412 batting average and 28 RBI.
He had nine doubles, three triples, and three home runs. He ended his high school career by hitting a home run in his final plate appearance.
“He was a big bat in our lineup”, commented Bobcat head baseball coach Scott Phillips. “He’s a complete ball player, with great character.
“His numbers would have been much better if he hadn’t missed two weeks after being hit in the helmet during the Barbe game.”
“I had a great opportunity playing for Eunice High School, with great teammates and an outstanding head coach in Coach Phillips,” said Hebert.
“I want to thank all the people and coaches who supported me during my high school career.”
Hebert, who was honored as an Academic All-Stater, will continue his baseball career at LSUE. “I’ve been playing summer ball and working out every day to get ready to compete at that level; hopefully to earn a spot in the starting lineup.”
