Hurricanes sweep St. Ed’s
Both North Central teams clinched their respective District 5-1A championships with a sweep over St. Edmund Friday night.
The top-ranked Lady Hurricanes (22-2, 9-0) opened the game with a 29-16 and then cruised to a 80-30 win over the No. 29 Lady Jays (10-14, 6-3).
The Lady Jays kept the game close, 8-6 before North Central went on a 13-2 run.
St. Edmund answered with buckets from Maggie Larriviere, Abby Brown and Abby Miller to close the gap to 23-14 with 2:01 left in the period.
Jada Duncantell scored four of the next six Lady Canes’ points before Lady Jay Victoria McGee hit a jumper with 10 seconds left to close the margin to 13 points.
North Central opened the second period with a 11-1 surge before Elissa David hit the only Lady Jay bucket of the period at the 4:43 mark.
The Lady Canes closed the half with a 15-0 run including a three-pointer at the buzzer by Quaniqua Joseph to give North Central a 55-19 lead at intermission.
The Lady Canes outscored St. Edmund 17-5 in the third period as the Lady Jays were limited to buckets by David amd Camille Leger along with a free throw from McGee.
Frantreka Duncantell pushed in the last five points in the quarter including a trey with 30 seconds left to give the Lady Canes a 72-24 lead.
North Central outscored the Lady Jays 8-0 to begin the fourth quarter, sparked by treys from Jada Duncantell and Joseph along with a jumper by Latrauchai Tyler.
The Lady Jays capped the night with three-pointers from David and Fontenot to close the final to 80-30.
Fontenot led St, Edmund with nine points, while David added seven points.
Joseph led North Central with 20 points, while Tyler chipped in 16 and Jada Duncantell added 14 points.
Diamond Nevills contributed 12 points and Frandreka Duncantell finished with 10 points as five Lady Canes finished in double figures.
The Lady Jays close the season at Basile Thursday.
NC 91, SEH 38
North Central stormed out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and then rolled to a 91-38 win over the Blue Jays.
Nikembe Johnson scored six of the first eight points along with a bucket by Jalen Smith and free throw from Robert Hegger.
Dylan Bieber and Cullen Brown scored in the lane for the first Blue Jay points.
Roberick Smith then hit a trey, while Jalen Smith and Johnson added late buckets to give the Canes a 21-4 first quarter advantage.
North Central continued its barrage with a 9-3 run, slowed by trey by John Ross Guillory.
Guillory later hit a free throw and Alex Dupre hit two more at the charity stripe to close the gap to 30-9 with 3:32 left in the second period.
North Central (11-13, 9-0) then went on a 10-1 run, capped by back-to-back bucket from Johnson and Lionel Harrison.
Guillory hit 3-for-4 free throws to close the margin to 40-13 but a bucket by Vondrick Jimmerson and a late trey from Hagger pushed the Hurricanes ahead 45-13 at intermission.
North Central outscored St. Edmund 24-13 in the third period, aided by a 14-5 run.
Guillory converted a four-point play to spark the Jays, but the Canes held a 56-20 lead halfway through the period.
St. Edmund (3-24, 3-6) answered with a 6-3 run includinged a put-back by Brown and two free throws by Bieber.
The Hurricanes closed the third frame with a 9-1 surge, including a trey by Smith and a drive in the lane by Hagger.
North Central sealed the disrict title with a 22-12 fourth quarter run.
Guillory scored on a baseline jumper to open the period for the Jays, but North Central went pm a 8-0 run including a trey by Jimmerson.
After Bieber’s score underneath closed the gap to 77-30 with 5:37 left, the Canes added five more with a trey by Harrison and a bucket from Hagger.
Brown hit two inside shots to help the Jays’ effort and Bieber adde a bcuket to close the margin to 86-36.
Jalen Wilson pushed in the last five points for North Central, while Guillory’s bucket with 1:21 left helped him finish with 16 points.
Bieber added nine points and Brown chipped in eight points.
Johnson led North Central with 22 points, while Smith added 13 points. Jimmerson and Hagger both finished with 10 points.
