Lady Jays, Blue Jays fall in Turkey Tournament

VILLE PLATTE – The Lady Devils jumped out to an eight-point lead that the Lady Jays never could overcome as Port Barre survived for a 31-29 win over St. Edmund in the annual Turkey Tournament at Sacred Heart.
Maddie Andrus scored four points and Payton Crowell added a bucket as the Lady Jays closed the gap to 8-6 midway through the first period.
Rona Hardy converted a three-point play and Sharona Hardy hit a trey as Lady Devils pushed ahead, 14-6.
Andrus scored off a steal as the Lady Jays closed the gap to 14-8 at the end of the first period.
After Sharona Hardy scored for Port Barre, Andrus scored three points and Margaret Vidrine hit a free throw as the Lady Jays pulled closer, 16-14 with 2:44 left.
Port Barre outscored St, Edmund 4-2 in closing mintues of the half to hold a 20-16 advantage at intermission.
The Lady Devils opened the third period with a 4-0 run before Andrus scored four points of her own to keep the Lady Jays close, 24-20.
St. Ed’s Samantha Bertrand later scored a bucket to close the margin to 26-22 as the game moved to the final quarter.
A free throw by Vidrine, a jumper by Crowell, combined with lay-up by Allison LaFleur tied the game , 27-27 with 4:08 left in the game.
Rona Hardy scored on the lane to retake the lead for the Lady Devils.
With 2:16 left, Bertrand forced a turnover and passed the ball to Crowell who scored in the lane to force a 29-29 tie,
Myra Mallett scored on a put-back bucket with 49 seconds left to seal the win for Port Barre.
Andrus finished with 10 points for the Lady Jays, while Crowell had 8 points.

Sacred Heart 69, St. Edmund 37
VILLE PLATTE – The St. Edmund football team is still in the football playoffs which was evident in just five players on the court for the Blue Jays Monday night against Sacred Heart of Ville Platte.
Sacred Heart’s 15 players outlasted St, Edmund for a 69-37 win in the annual Turkey Tournament.
The Trojans jumped out to an 11-0 advantage, aided by six points from Sean Fontenot.
John Guillory hit a trey at the 5:00 mark for the first Blue Jay points.
He then drove the lane to close the gap to 11-5 with 3:39 left.
A pair of treys from Keaton Tate and Sean Fontenot along with a put-back by Patrick Donovan pushed the Trojans ahead. 19-5 as the game moved to the second quarter.
A baseline jumper by Quinten Swann and two free throws by Christian McFarlain helped the Jays close the gap to 22-9.
Swann later scored on a second-chance bucket and McFarlain hit two more three throws to pull closer, 28-13.
Swann drilled a trey with 3:53 left in the first half to help the Jays close the gap to 30-16.
But the Trojans then went on a 9-1 run to finish the half and take a 39-17 advantage into the locker room.
Most of the third period was put at the charity stripe as Swann, Dylan Beiber, Guillory and McFarlain all hit free throws but no Blue Jay scored buckets in the quarter.
Tate’s drive in the lane, a put-back by Nathan Fontenot and a trey from Ben Johnson helped the Trojans forge ahead, 53-23.
Guillory hit three free throws and later drilled a trey as the Jays continued the battle, trailing, 60-29 with 5:11 left in the game.
Swann added two more free throws and a trey as St. Edmund closed the gap to 64-34 late in the contest.
Garrett Ortego hit a three-pointer and Ellis Lahaye scored in the lane for the Trojans.
McFarlain score in the lane with 31 seconds left for the final Blue Jay points.
Swann finished with 14 points, while McFarlain added 12 points for the Jays.
Guillory had 11 points and Bieber added a free throw.
Sean Fontenot led Sacred Heart with 19 points, while Brad Fontenot and Seth Manuel each chipped in nine points.
