Lady Jays, Blue Jays roll in Elton Tourney

ELTON – Lady Jay senior Maddie Andrus scored 27 points to lead St. Edmund to a 59-46 win over Welsh in the opening game of the Elton tournament.
The game was even after each period until the Lady Jays exploded for 23 points in the fourth quarter to seal their first win of the season.
Andrus opened the game with seven points in the first period as the Lady Jays and Lady Greyhounds battled to a 12-12 tie.
Samantha Bertrand drilled a trey and Sydney Thibodeaux added a bucket for St. Edmund in the period.
Andrus added six more points in the second period and Payton Crowell score four points to get the game even, 25-25 at the break.
The game remained tight in the third period as Crowell scored five points to keep the Lady Jays even with Welsh at 36-36.
Andrus scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, including seven free throws to help St. Edmund go on a 23-13 run and earn the win.
Crowell added a free throw to finish with 10 points, while Bertrand chipped in three of her six points in the final period.
Thibodeaux added two free throws to close with four points.
Allison LaFleur scored four points in the second half, while Constance Fontenot hit two free throws in the fourth quarter.
Vidrine hit a bucket in the final period to close out with five points.
After hitting just 8-of-24 free throws in Tuesday’s 45-36 loss to Basile, the Lady Jays made 17-of-33 at the charity stripe against Welsh.
Abigail Herbert led Welsh with 15 points, including seven points in the second half.

E. Beau. 51, SEH 19

Playing their fourth game in five days, the Lady Jays could not match up with East Beauregard and suffered a 51-19 loss in the Elton Tournament.
The two teams play each other again on Tuesday at St. Edmund.
The Lady Trojans jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter and then pushed their lead to 28-13 at the break.
An 11-3 run in the third period extended East Beauregard’s lead to 39-16.
The Lady Jay’s offensive struggles continued in the final period as they were outscored, 12-3.
Andrus and Bertrand each scored five points to lead St. Edmund, while Crowell chipped in four points.
Thibodeaux added three points and Vidrine contributed two points for the Lady Jays.

SEH boys 75, Kinder 53
ELTON – St. Edmund senior Christian McFarlain scorched the nets for 30 points to help lead the Blue Jays to a 75-53 win over Kinder Thursday in the Elton tournament.
St. Edmund jumped out to a 19-9 first quarter lead and pushed ahead 38-22 at intermission.
Kinder went on a 17-9 run in the third period, but the Jays put the game away with a 28-14 fourth-quarter battle.
“Our quality defense is what makes our transition on offense work a lot easier,” St. Edmund coach Hunter Dawkins said. “We have not developed an identity yet because of our lack of practice but hopefully we can get the ball rolling in that direction.”
Dawkins praised the efforts of his veteran players, including McFarlain, Stone Lejeune and Drew Brown in helping the Blue Jays earn the win.
LeJeune finished with 15 points and three steals.
Drew Brown added 11 points and four assists, while Cullen Brown had nine rebounds.
The Jays will entertain East Beauregard on Tuesday.
