Lady Jays, Trojans share wins

The Lady Jays picked up their second win of the season Tuesday against East Beauregard, while the Trojans held off a late St. Edmund rally in a non-district battle.
The Lady Jays (2-6) opened the game with a 7-5 run, sparked by an inside shot by Maggie Larriviere, a three-point play from Elissa David and a drive in the lane by Gabby Fontenot.
The two teams battled for control in the second period as the lead changed three times in the quarter.
East Beauregard’s Madison Budnik pushed in three points to give the Lady Trojans a 8-7 advantage.
David drove the lane for the Lady Jays and Lilly Moreau drained a three-pointer to give St. Edmund a 12-10 lead.
Maili Bartz tied the game for the Lady Trojans, but Victoria McGee hit two free throws and Fontenot’s trey gave the Lady Jays a 17-13 lead at the break.
St. Edmund went on a 10-5 run in the third period begun by a trey from McGee.
Camille Leger later scored on a put-back and an in-bound play, while Allison LaFleur scored off a steal to push the Lady Jays ahead, 27-18.
After Leger scored on a second-chance bucket to give the Lady Jays a nine-point lead, East Beau answered with a 5-0 run to close the gap to 29-23.
A three-pointer from Fontenot and a pair of inside shot from Leger excited the home crowd and pushed St. Edmund up 36-28.
Three buckets from Budnick helped the Lady Trojans keep the game close, but free throws from Fontenot, LaFleur and McGee in the final two minutes sealed the win for the Lady Jays.
Fontenot and Leger each scored eight points for St. Edmund, while McGee chipped in seven points.
Budnik led East Beauregard (1-3) with 12 points.
St. Edmund will travel to Lake Arthur tonight.
East Beau 48, SEH 35
The Trojans stormed out to a 26-8 first quarter lead and appeared to be poised for a rout before the Blue Jays battled back to close the final deficit to 48-35.
East Beauregard opened the game with a 12-0 run, including three-pointers from Jake Langley, Dane Greene and Carson Campbell.
The only points in the period for the Blue Jays came on a lay-up by William Chachere with 39 seconds left in the quarter.
A late bucket by Greene gave the Trojans a 17-2 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Chachere drilled a trey early in the second period to close the gap to 19-5 but the Trojans answered with a 6-0 surge to move ahead, 24-5 midway through the quarter.
A free throw by Cullen Brown and a layup from John Ross Guillory helped the Blue Jays close the halftime deficit to 26-8.
The Blue Jays rallied for a 7-0 run to begin the second half, including drives inside by Brown and Guillory aided by a put-back from Dylan Bieber as St. Edmund pulled closer, 29-15.
A 6-0 run by the Trojans was stopped by a trey from Guillory.
East Beau then closed the quarter with a 7-0 surge, including a three-pointer by Coleton Guidry to give the Trojans a 38-20 adavantage heading into the final period.
A three-pointer from Elliott Reaves and a lay-up by Langley gave the Trojans a 44-23 midway through the final quarter.
The Blue Jays did not go away quietly as a pair of three-pointers from Alex Dupre and a three more points from Guillory helped St. Edmund pull closer, 46-32.
A free throw from Brown and shot at the buzzer by Dupre cut the final margin to 48-35.
Guillory led the Blue Jays (0-8) with 15 points, while Chachere and Dupre each added eight points.
Campbell led the Trojans (2-2) with 14 points, while Langley added 11 points.
After visiting Lake Arthur tonight, the Blue Jays will participate in the Basile tournament next weekend.
