Teams receive jamboree checks

By Tom Dodge

Through the first four years, the Joe Nagata Memorial Jamboree has raised more than $175,000 for Eunice High and St. Edmund athletics.
“Every year, we have grossed more than $60,000 a year,” jamboree chairman Tony Fuselier said. “After the bills were paid, each school has gotten no less than $22,000 each year.
“The two programs have been able to do things that they couldn’t have done without the funds.
“Since its inception, the goal was to raise as much money as we could for both athletic programs,” Fuselier said. “I think we have exceeded any expectations.
Fuselier said helping the athletes is the main goal of the jamboree.
“We are excited that the jamboree has become a premier event,” he said. “It is a tribute to Joe Nagata’s influence on both Eunice High and St, Edmund.”
Fuselier said the jamboree has a great committee and sponsors that helped through the tough economy this summer.
“It worked out better than we thought it would,” he said. “We only fell short about $3,5000 from last year.”
Fuselier said while the contracts still have to be re-negoiated, he expects Notre Dame and Sacred Heart of Ville Platte to return in 2017.
“They both seem to enjoy visting Eunice,” he said. “It is also a good revenue deal for them.
“Their fans are close, which is a key element to the success of the jamboree.”
