The dress rehearsal didn’t go as planned for St. Edmund as Sacred Heart of Ville Platte earned a 20-0 win over the Blue Jays in the finale of the Joe Nagata Memorial jamboree.
Sacred Heart was forced to punt on the opening drive and St. Ed’s moved the ball near midfield before Julien Vidrine picked off Peter Miller’s pass at the Trojan 18 with 7:07 left in the half.
The two teams exchanged punts and St. Edmund pinned the Trojan back at the SHVP 3 after a long kick by Miller.
But Sacred Heart quickly responded as J.T. Harper took the direct snap and raced 97 yards through the Jay defense for the game’s first touchdown.
The extra point failed but the Trojans led 6-0 with 3:39 remaining in the first half.
The Blue Jays fumbled the kickoff and Sacred Heart’s Brandon Fontenot recovered the ball at the Trojan 43.
On the very next play, Vidrine ran 57 yards for the touchdown.
Alec Gotro’s kick pushed Sacred Heart ahead, 13-0 with 3:01 left in the half.
The Trojans recovered another Blue Jay fumble at St. Edmund’s 19.
On fourth-down and the final play of the half, the Trojans failed to score as Wesley Launey’s pass to Jacques Fontenot was imcomplete in the back of the end zone.
After exchanging punts to open the second half, Sacred Heart’s Daniel Scully recovered a blocked punt in the end zone.
Gotro’s PAT gave the Trojans a 20-0 advantage with 5:10 left in the game.
Harper led all rushers with 104 yards on three carries, while Vidrine finished with seven carries for 68 yards.
Luke Doucet gained 32 yards on nine carries for the Blue Jays, while St. Edmund was limited to 41 yards of total offense on 24 plays.
