VC ends Lady Jays' season
ABBEVILLE – The No. 5 Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles rebounded from regular season finale loss to rival Gueydan with a 57-43 win over No. 28 St. Edmund.
The Lady Eagles (24-6) move on to play No. 21 Homer, who upset No. 12 Basile, 54-40.
The Lady Eagles held a 12-9 lead with a two minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The Lady Eagles built on that momentum to start the second, when Jay Demouchet nailed at three-pointer to start an 8-2 run.
A three by Natalie Camel put VC up 29-11 early in the second quarter.
The Lady Eagles carried a 35-15 lead into the halftime.
“I think we played really well in the first half,” VC head coach Kim Guidry said. “We had a good effort on defense.”
St. Edmund head coach Erica Zaunbrecher said VC’s defense effort factored heavily in her team’s first-half deficit.
“They changed it up and they were going to the ball more than we were,” Zaunbrecher said. “That made a difference.”
The halftime break made a difference for St. Ed’s. Gabby Fontenot connected on a three-pointer to start third quarter, on that ended with St. Ed’s out scoring VC 16-8.
“We made some adjustments on our defense,” Zaunbrecher said.
“Our girls worked hard make sure they were ready and set for their open shots.
“They worked really well together in the third quarter.”
The Lady Eagles went without a field goal during the final 3:44 of the third frame. That allowed St. Ed’s to climb within 12, at 43-31.
“I thought we go a little complacent in the third quarter,” Guidry said. “We still showed character to come back and take control of the game.”
Camel got things going early in the fourth quarter with a jumper from the top of the key. After a basket by White, Merideth Stutes turned winning a battle for a loose ball under the goal into two points and a 49-33 lead.
“I asked our girls something before the game,” Guidry said. “I asked them if the world would end today, how would you play? Try hard for every loose ball, every rebound and every possession.
“I think they did that.”
