Alleged VP band "deckline" hazing under investigation

The Evangeline Parish District Attorney’s office is investigating the alleged assault of members of the Ville Platte High School marching band by other members of the band.
A source who has knowledge of the incident, who requested anonymity, said that before the incident, the band director, who has since lost her job at the school, described a hazing practice called a “deckline.”
Thesource said when one of the band members asked what that was, the band director had that student and another student run through the deckline -- a gauntlet between two rows of band members who struck them with their belts. The source also said the band director was laughing when the deckline was taking place.
The source said one of the two students had more than 20 bruises and cuts due to being struck with the belts, and that photos of those marks have been turned over to authorities.
One of the two students quit the band over the objections of the student’s parent, who said a band scholarship was expected to help defray costs of post high school education.
The source said band members taking part in the deckline were suspended from school for a week.
Although the district attorney’s office is reported to be looking into the incident, no charges are known to have been filed.
