Drivers die in interstate head-on between 18-wheelers; New Iberia family's car barely missed
Two drivers died when the 18-wheeler driven by one crossed the I-10 median and struck one driven by the other head-on.
State Police said the accident happened just before 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Preliminary investigation revealed that an 18 wheeler traveling west on I-10 crossed the median and hit another18 wheeler in a head-on collision in the eastbound lanes.
After impact, both vehicles caught fire with one coming to rest across the eastbound lanes of I-10 and the other off the right side of the roadway.
The crash resulted in fatal injuries for both drivers, whose names were withheld pending notification to next of kin.
This crash remains under investigation with roadway updates to be forthcoming.
Bryan Foti with the Jennings Police Department was traveling on Interstate 10 Wednesday evening when he witnessed the crash. He told Jennings newspaper that the collision was just inches away from claiming at least six more lives, as a New Iberia family barely avoided the accident.
"The accident happened right behind me," Foti said. "I was heading eastbound when the westbound 18-wheeler left the roadway into the median. I saw the truck cross the median and then I saw cars going off the side of the road. There was a vehicle loaded with a family from New Iberia heading home from the water park in Sulphur and I don't know how it missed the accident. It was by inches. The wife was driving them home and the truck that got hit was right next to her."
Foti said he stopped to assist state police with the accident, and many people were shaken up at the scene.
"There was a huge explosion," he said, "and we had to secure traffic on both sides. It took us a while to move the cars that were stuck on I-10 to get the fire trucks in."
Foti said police believe there was some sort of issue with the driver that crossed the median.
"Witnesses reported that it looked like he never hit his brakes and there is no indication that he ever hit his brakes as he crossed through the median," Foti noted.
