Police: Alcohol a factor in death of man killed in I-10 wreck

Alcohol was a factor in a single-vehicle wreck that occurred about midnight Monday on the eastbound Interstate 10 Service Road near the Iota/Estherwood exit, a news release from Louisiana State Police Troop I stated.
The crash occurred as 27-year-old Shameka Semere of Houston, Texas, was driving a 1997 Chrysler van eastbound on the Interstate 10 Service Road, police said. Semere failed to negotiate a left hand curve, ran off of the roadway and struck a ditch embankment, police said.
Semere was properly restrained and was not injured, police said.
However, the passenger, Edwin Johnson, was not wearing a seat belt and suffered fatal injuries, police said. Johnson was pronounced dead on scene by an Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office representative, police said.
Impairment on the part of Semere was suspected and she was given a chemical breath test, which indicated she was over twice the legal limit for alcohol, police said.
Semere was arrested for vehicular homicide and careless operation, police said. She was booked into the Acadia Parish Jail.
