Some drivers discover Eunice police vigilant on seat belt use
In two seat belt campaigns, Eunice police found 225 seat belt violations, according to police records.
The campaigns were Buckle Up In Your Truck April 24 to 30 and “Click It Or Ticket May 18 through 31.
The police department received grants from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission with the goal of reducing the number of fatal and injury crashes in the state.
Sherry Clark, secretary for Police Chief Randy Fontenot, tallied the efforts of police during the programs.
In Phase One, Buckle Up In Your Truck, police worked 124 hours out of 125 allotted for overtime, issued 74 seat belt violations, three child restraint violations and 23 other violations.
In Phase Two, Click It Or Ticket, police issued 121 citations/warnings for drivers not wearing seat belts, 20 citations/warnings for passengers not wearing seat belts and eight citations for children not be properly restrained.
Police worked 238 hours of 250 hours available for overtime in the Click It Or Ticket program.
Also, during the program police issued 62 other citations for stop sign violations, speeding, improper plates, expired driver’s license, revoked/suspended driver’s license, no insurance, careless operation, expired plates, failure to use turn signal and burnt headlight/tail light.
The department received a $2,500 grand for the truck program and $5,000 for Click It Or Ticket It.
The third phase is Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, which targets impaired driving, and is scheduled Aug. 15 to Sept. 17. The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission is providing a $5,000 grant for police to work up to 250 hours of over time pay to participating officers.
