Troopers investigating death of 2-year-old child near Church Point

Police say child fell out of window

A 2-year-old boy died after he fell out of the front passenger window of a vehicle on Monday, according to a news release from Louisiana State Police Troop I.
The incident that took the life of Mitchell Watson of Church Point occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on La. 365 north of La. 1099 in Acadia Parish, police said.
The police investigation said Amber Waton, 32, of Church Point, was driving a 2013 Ford Edge south on La. 365 when the 2-year-old fell out the window.
The boy sustained critical injuries and was taken to Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge, where he later died from his injuries, police said.
Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, police said. Watson submitted to a chemical breath test and her results showed no signs of impairment.
The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending, police said.
The news release said state law requires the driver of a motor vehicle to ensure that every child under the age of 13 years in a motor vehicle equipped with safety belts is properly secured, regardless of seating position, in the vehicle. Until a child is 6 years old and weighs at least 60 pounds, that child is required by law to be restrained in a proper child restraint system.
Louisiana State Police Troop I serves as a grant-funded Child Passenger Safety fitting station every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to noon. Certified child passenger safety technicians are available to inspect and to assist with instillation of child safety seats.
