Former LSU history prof
BATON ROUGE – Services were Oct. 2 for retired chairman of the LSU History Dept. John Louis Loos. He died Sept. 25 at age 93.
Loos, a decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II, chaired the LSU History Department for 25 years and was an interim Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. His historical specialty was the American West.
Survivors include his wife Helen, a son and a daughter.

Swamp Pop sax player
OPELOUSAS – Services for Swamp Pop saxophonist John Smithey will be Monday. He died Sept. 30 at age 68.
Smithey was a member of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. He played with numerous bands, including Tommy McClain and The Boogie Kings.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter.
Arrangements are by Sibille.
