As political conventions grab headlines and campaign rhetoric moves into full fury, I am reminded of Gov. Earl Long’s remarks during one of his campaigns in the 1950s. He said there was no way his opponents could keep the promises they were making, and everyone should know they couldn’t.
The following are from the pages of the July 2002 editions of The Eunice News.
The Eunice All-Star Mustangs won the state championship. They were to compete in Humble, Texas, in the next level of competition.
June sales tax revenues in St. Landry Parish and Eunice are at best flat and mostly down in month-to-month and year-to-date comparisons.

Black mold problems at the Liberty Theater were worse than initially thought, Eunice Mayor Scott Fonenot said.
In May the historic theater was closed for repairs to leaks in the roof and to stop moisture problems.

By Monday Eunice city vehicles in the street, wastewater and gas departments will be equipped with GPS devices, Mayor Scott Fontenot said.
Fontenot was busy Thursday helping Todd Smith, a mechanic at the City Barn, install the GPS devices in vehicles.

The sixth annual Community Foundation of Acadiana’s Leaders in Philanthropy Awards Luncheon will be held on Nov. 11 at the Cajundome Convention Center. Doors will open at 11 a.m. and the program will be from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The LSU College of Humanities & Social Sciences has announced the largest endowed chair in university history. The Edwin K. Hunter Chair in the Traditions of Rhetoric and Argument in Communication Studies was made possible by a $1.8 million gift honoring LSU alumnus Edwin K. Hunter.

Chief cites training, community relations as factor for relative calm
A Eunice man pleaded guilty Tuesday to convincing a minor girl to send him sexually explicit pictures, U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said in a news release.

Irice Ann Darbonne Lavergne passed away on Thursday November 17, 2016 at the age of 73.
Burial will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Eunice.
