Accused pleads not guilty in George Fisher death case

Almost a year to the date after Eunice civil rights activist and retired educator George Fisher, 63, died in an auto accident, the other driver pleaded not guilty to killing him.
Fisher and a passenger in his car, Calvin Cheeks, 63, of Church Point died last March after Fisher’s car was hit by a pickup driven by Gerardo Robles-Velasquez, 29.
Proceedings 15th Judicial District Court in Crowley were initially delayed due to the defendant’s critical injuries, then by the need to have an interpreter in court for Robles-Velasquez’s arraignment.
He is charged with two counts vehicular homicide, DWI 3rd, five counts of vehicular negligent injury and one court of reckless driving.
Fisher’s brother, Scottie, was among the injured.
Robles-Velasquez’s truck first hit a SUV driven by a Scott woman from behind before careening across La. 95 just north of I-10 and striking the Fisher vehicle.
Robles-Velasquez pleaded not guilty at his March 12 arraignment.
His two previous DWI charges occurred in Harris County (Houston), Texas, both in 2010, according to court records.
