Basile standoff ends in death, injury

One Basile man is dead and one Evangeline Parish Deputy was injured following a Wednesday night stand-off.
Basile Police said that David Michael Aucoin, 46, of Basile was “acting very irrationally” and “had been hallucinating” moments he died as a result of a believed self-inflicted gunshot wound in the woods near his home.
At approximately 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Basile Police Chief, Allen Ivory, Jr., was contacted by family members of Mr. David Michael Aucoin, who was reportedly sitting on his front porch with two loaded firearms. While another family member was also on the porch with Aucoin, attempting to calm him down, Aucoin Mr. Aucoin bolted from his porch, with a loaded weapon, and ran into a wooded area near his home.
Basile Police Officers were dispatched immediately, to the scene. Because the area is surrounded by numerous other residences, several other agencies, including Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Department, LA. Wildlife and Fisheries, and Eunice Police Department K-9 Unit, were dispatched for assistance. When Aucoin failed to respond to requests by family members, and the Basile Police Department, officers had the perimeter completely secured. Further attempts were made to get Aucoin to surrender his weapon, and come out of the woods. After a several hour stand-off, Officer’s confronted Aucoin in a heavily wooded area approximately 80 yards from his residence.
At approximately 8:30 p.m. after being confronted by officers, police said that Aucoin turned his weapon on himself and was fatally wounded from a self-inflicted gun shot. The Acadian Ambulance Paramedics were brought into the scene. Aucoin was then determined to be deceased. The Evangeline Parish Coroner’s office arrived on scene, at approximately 10:15 p.m. and pronounced Mr. Aucoin deceased.
During the confrontation, one Evangeline Parish Deputy was injured and transported to Mercy Medical Center, in Ville Platte, for injuries received. Police said that the injuries were not “weapon related.” The deputy was treated and released.
Investigation continues by Basile Police Department.
