City honors 'Mister Sen' with retirement ceremony

Garland Senegal retires -- again.

Eunice law enforcement honored the career of Garland Senegal, or “Mister Sen”, on Saturday as he made his second retirement in his 40-plus years of service to the Eunice Police Department and the Eunice City Marshal’s office.
However, the retirement could have been seen as Senegal’s third retirement. Perhaps the first initial retirement for Senegal didn’t take.
Senegal retired as a full-time sergeant from the police department in the 1990s. Senegal then went to work part-time for the Eunice Police Department, continuing to work for the city and helping to transport prisoners out of the city jail to Opelousas. As of late, Senegal became a deputy marshal from the city marshal’s office. And ceremony honoring him at Eunice City Hall took place on Saturday with Senegal’s family members and dignitaries present for the occasion.
Senegal, 79, had a profound impact on generations of local law enforcement employees and community members during his more than four decades of service, according to some of his peers. Senegal worked with Robert Johnson, chief deputy marshal for the Eunice City Marshal’s office, for more than 14 of those many years.
“Mr. Senegal has always been someone that I’ve looked up to,” said Johnson. “You hate to see him retire, but you want him to enjoy his retirement before he gets any older. It’s been a great 14 years since been I’ve been here. He and I have had some great conversations. And I’ve learned a lot of life lessons from him. I just want to thank him for his service.”
