Baton Rouge, La. --
The Louisiana Senate Wednesday unanimously approved a measure to require public schools to teach students how to write cursive.
Currently, the teaching of cursive is optional, and SB 275’s author, Sen. Beth Mizell, R-Franklinton, said she wants students to know how to have a signature, read historical documents and write cursive in school.
The bill would require schools to introduce cursive by the third grade and incorporate it into the curriculum through the senior year in high school..
The measure would go into effect in the upcoming school year, and now heads to the House for consideration.
