The Louisiana State University Eunice baseball team won the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II World Series in Millington, Tennessee. The Bengals made their way to the title through the loser’s bracket. The Bengals captured the series victory from three-time champions Grand Rapids Community College. Bengals pitcher Brett Durand threw a perfect nine-innings and shut down the Raiders.
Marsela Jakub-Wood, of Eunice High School, was named a recipient of the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship award. Cecil Picard, state superintendent of education, announced the scholarship awards.
Three students from Eunice received medical degrees at the Louisiana Health Science Center’s School of Medicine. There were Charles Rodney Bowie, Jade Nicholas Heinen and Thomasina Quintina Parker.
James Kee Tucker and Hannah Rockett were the recipients of the American Legion Award at Eunice High School.
Alex Fontenot and Megan Wimberly were recognized as “Mr. and Miss Blue Jay.” Coach Ward Courville presented the awards.
Eunice native Nicodemus Bernard was selected to represent Auburn University as an American Ambassador of Industrial Design in Taiwan.
The St. Landry Parish Council placed a 15-mill, 30-year property tax on the Sept. 30, 2006, ballot to fund a road improvement plan.
Author Ernest Gaines visited the LSUE campus where he delivered a reading and signed autographs.
Haley Larson, daughter of Freddie and Marcia Larson, a Eunice High School graduate, was chosen to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette cheerleading squad.
Graduates from the University of Monroe with doctor of pharmacy degrees were Lauren Brooke Prather, Jada Young Manuel, Angelle Nicole Joubert and Kate Monette McGee.
