Eunice schools meet, exceed LEAP state averages

According to the Department of Education release of LEAP tests results, overall, 69 percent of students statewide achieved “basic” results or better, the same percentage as in 2013.
Eunice schools met or exceeded state averages in fourth-and eighth-grade Louisiana Educational Assessment Program testing this spring.
Eunice Elementary excelled in all the fourth-grade LEAP testing categories this spring hitting the 100 percentile in mathematics, with English at 97 percentile, science 95; and social studies at 98 percentile.
Principal Mary Dupre at Eunice Elementary said, “I am very proud of our teachers, staff, and students as well as our parents.
“As we journey through the new rigor of Common Core state standards and the transition from “basic” to “mastery” as the academic expectation, our LEAP scores show that we are on the right track.
“It is a wonderful feeling to know that our fourth-graders leave Eunice Elementary School with a strong foundation in preparation to further their education.
East Elementary excelled in two of the tested categories, hitting 95 percentile in English, math at 92 percentile; science, 89, and social studies, 85.
East Elementary Principal Dwanetta Scott is pleased with scores. She said, “The test scores reflect a positive trend for East Elementary. In addition to the hardworking teachers and students of East Elementary, we contribute this growth to collaboration with area schools as well as school-wide PLC’s(professional learning communities), a new data room for data analysis, student action plans based on data analysis and the purchase of additional resources aligned to common core state standards.
“We are extremely proud of our parental support as well. Our theme for this year is “It’s an East Thing...Excellence is what we do!”
Close behind East Elementary is Glendale Elementary with reported percentiles of English at 97 percentile, math, 86; science, 89; social studies, 89.
Eunice Junior High eighth-graders tested 66 percentile in English, math, 42; science, 60; and social studies, 63.
According to Louisiana Department of Education report, in English Language Arts, 27 percent of students performed at the mastery level or higher, compared to 26 percent in 2013. For math, 25 percent of students scored at mastery or higher on this year’s assessments fully aligned to new academic expectations, a 2 point increase from 23 percent in 2013.
At a statewide level, the number of of LEAP fourth-graders testing for ELA (English Language Arts) scored in the 76 percentile, math, 76, science, 68, and social studies 70; while parish-wide (St. Landry Parish) fourth-grade LEAP test results were a 76 percentile in ELA, math, 66, science, 63; and social studies, 64.
Eighth-graders at statewide level and parish-wide testing for ELA reached 66 percentile at Basic promotional standard this spring.
Students can earn the following scores on annual assessments-LEAP and iLEAP: Advanced: A student demonstrates superior performance in the subject.
Mastery: A student demonstrates competency of challenging subject matter and is well prepared for the next level of schooling.
Basic: A student demonstrates only fundamental knowledge and skills in the subject.
Approaching Basic: A student only partially demonstrates the fundamental knowledge and skills of the subject.
Unsatisfactory: A student does not demonstrate the fundamental knowledge and skills.
Highland Elementary scores included: English, 87 percent passing, math, 78; science, 71; and social studies, 87.
Here are the statewide passing percentages for the four elementary testing categories: English, 76; math, 76; science, 68; and social studies, 70.
The parish rates are: English, 76; math, 66, science, 63; and social studies, 64.
The state wide passing percentage for eighth-graders are: English, 66; math, 64; science, 64; and social studies, 65.
The parish rates: English, 66; math, 57; science, 87, and social studies, 88.
As comparison of St. Landry Parish to Acadia Parish 4th grade LEAP testing scores, Acadia Parish scores were parish-wide: English, 74; math 82, science, 67, and social studies, 67.
Acadia Parish 8th graders scored English, 66; math, 65, science, 65; and social studies, 64.
