Workmen are moving a three-inch gas line to make way for shoring up the road bed with pilings at the Bobcat Bridge. L.C. Keifer is supervising for Ashy Pipeline Co.

Gov. Buddy Roemer is struggling to close a $700 million budget shortfall. He proposes to scuttle a 7 percent teacher pay raise, among other things.

The Eunice High mixed doubles team of Alisa Ardoin and Charlie Rougeau lost in the state tennis tournament semi-finals to a team from Jena. Also losing at the state tournament were the St. Edmund doubles teams of Ashley Husers and Liz Leger and Rachel Maretel and Jenny Rozas.

Ouachita Christian got a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to end St. Edmund’s hope of defending its Class A baseball championship. The Jays had taken an 8-6 lead in the top of the inning.

Eunice High junior Tommy Fay won the state 110-meter hurdle title, with a 15.0 seconds race.

Retired teacher and public school guidance counselor Rodney Manuel will succeed Amanda Lafleur as guidance counselor at St. Edmund High School. Lafleur is relocating to California.

Steven Moosa, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Moosa of Eunice, has been named outstanding LSU at Eunice student majoring in accounting.

Layne Tujaque is new president of the Junior Auxiliary. Other officers include Myra Pavich, recording secretary and treasurer; Joan Aucoin, first vice president; Ginger Rozas, second vice president; Lois LaFleur, placement; Cindy Marcantel, corresponding secretary; Patti Guillory, publicity; Misty Freeman, parliamentarian; Oneita Kratzer, provisional trainer; and Debbie Siebert, placement.

Valedictorian at St. Edmund High this year is Rochelle Anne Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Young. Holding that honor at Eunice High is Christina L. Myers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Myers.
