La. House passes to bill to ban domestic abusers from legally obtaining firearms

Manship School News Service

The Louisiana House unanimously passed a bill Monday that would add those convicted of domestic abuse battery to the list of people who would be prohibited from obtaining firearms.
House Bill 624, by Rep. Helena Moreno, D-New Orleans, would also require each city or parish clerk of court to report the conviction within 10 days to the Louisiana Supreme Court, and for the court to report it within 15 days to a background check database.
Currently, people convicted of violent crimes and those committed to mental health treatment facilities or use insanity as a plea in a court proceeding are reported to the database and are not allowed to purchase firearms.
