Lightning strike triggers wreck that killed husband, wife in I-49 wreck in Evangeline Parish

A vehicle struck by lightning triggered a wreck that killed a Covington husband and wife in a three-vehicle wreck On Interstate 49 northbound, south of the Bunkie exit in Evangeline Parish, a Louisiana State Police Troop I news release stated.
A 12-month-old child in the couple’s vehicle survived the crash.
Police identified the couple as Austin Jones, 22, and Destinee Jones, 24.
The wreck occurred about 1 p.m. Friday..
Police said three vehicles were traveling north on Interstate 49.
The first, a 2013 Chrysler 200, operated Curtis Williams, 49, of New Orleans, a 2010 International wrecker truck operated Harold Dauzat, 24, of Ville Platte and a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado operated Austin Jones of Covington, police said.
The Chrysler 200 was struck by lightning and became disabled in the roadway, police said.  The wrecker truck was following behind the Chrysler, but was able to stop before striking the Chrysler, police said.
The Chevrolet Silverado, operated by Jones was unable to stop and struck the wrecker truck from behind, police said.  That initial impact caused the wrecker truck to move forward and strike the Chrysler 200, police said.
Austin Jones was wearing a seat belt, but suffered fatal injuries, Jones was pronounced dead on scene by a St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office representative.  Destinee Jones a passenger, was also wearing a seat belt and suffered critical injuries.  She was transported to Opelousas General Hospital where she later died from her injuries.  A 12-month-old child was properly restrained in a child safety seat and suffered minor injuries.
Harold Dauzat, the driver of the wrecker truck was not injured as a result of the crash.
Curtis Williams and his three passengers were all wearing seat belts and suffered minor injuries.  Williams and his passengers were transported to Bunkie General Hospital.
Impairment is not believed to be a factor, however; toxicology samples were taken from Jones and Williams and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.  Dauzat submitted a proper breath sample and was not impaired.
This crash remains under investigation.
