Schools close early, heavy additional afternoon rain expected

Trucks that are not supposed to be on the roadway to begin with push through overflowing water on La. 13 South in Eunice on Wednesday morning. A detour is in effect at La. 13 and Maple Ave., sending south-bound trucks to the west and then south, but the detour is usually ignored.

Heavy rains over Eunice and west St. Landry Parish had subsided by late morning, just as parish schools prepared to close early due to inclement weather.
Though the rain had stopped and water levels were dropping from roadways, the forecast for a resumption of heavy rain this after led school officials to pull the plug on the next-to-last day of the 2013-14 school year.
Eunice Police still advised motorists to drive with caution or detour to different routes as certain roadways and streets are under water... Hwy. 190 East (E. Laurel Avenue) nearby Amy Shopping Center is under water as well as intersection of Vivian St. and E. Laurel. If traveling in or approaching Eunice, use extra precaution as water levels are rising. Bridges, ditches, are overflowing ... be cautious.
The area is receiving delivered by a low pressure system over Texas that is pumping atmospheric water in from the Gulf of Mexico. A half-inch of rain fell just before midnight Tuesday, then the bottom opened up as the night wore on. Some places in St. Landry and Acadia Parishes received more than 8 inches after midnight and drains and waterways dry or at low levels 24 hours ago are overflowing this morning.
The National Weather Service expects the counter-clockwise flow of moisture-filled air to continue over the area through week's end as the system slowly creeps to the east.
