Simpson has had her fill of city's dog and pony show

There’s an ongoing dog and pony show in Eunice. Ward 2 Alderwoman Germaine Simpson wants to do something about horses in the city limits as well as feral, or roaming, dogs that she says are becoming a nuisance. Simpson hopes to solve the problem with a few city ordinances.
While Simpson first touched on the animal control issue in April, the recent May meeting saw her introduce new ordinances to curb the growing problem of horses in the city limits. She said that she has not drafted ordinance in regards to the dog problem, but hinted at a quick fix in regards to a “dog ordinance.”
“It’s my understanding that we do not have a full-time animal control person, we only have a part-timer,” said Simpson at the May council meeting. “So there are a lot of stipulations when you set up an ordinance. For a dog ordinance, you need an animal control person available in order to enforce the ordinance. So that is something that I will be looking at.”
Simpson said that she research other municipalities’ laws regarding horses within the city limits.
“There are three cities that I pulled their ordinance to look at, Rayne and Crowley first and then I pulled the ordinance from Lake Charles,” said Simpson.
“Lake Charles had the best ordinance. And the reason that this ordinance has come about is because we are experiencing some problems with horses and how they’re kept in backyards. We get calls about horse riding in Eunice at any time. It’s become a problem, especially during the summer time.”
Simpson added to the “new business” of the council: one ordinance to amend the livestock/animal control ordinance, one ordinance titled “no horse riding in the city limits without approval” and another ordinance 14:84 regarding parades in the city as they pertain to horse riding.
The council will hold public hearings before putting the matters to a vote.
