What next for Parish Prez, Council?

It’s been a good autumn for St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot.
First, voters approved the 2-cent sales tax he asked for in unincorporated areas to finance a 15-year, $70 million road improvement program.
Second, his parish council nemesis Pam Gautreau announced she will not seek re-election in the 2015.
Fontenot and Gautreau have gone tooth and toenail since he took office in January 2011 and she began her second consecutive term.
Their mutual disdain spilled over again earlier this month, when Fontenot took the extreme measure of reading into the council meeting minutes a letter excoriating Gautreau and council member Wayne Ardoin.
Fontenot called on the council to never put either of the two in a leadership position again, citing their opposition to the road proposal.
Ardoin, former council president and once a candidate for the parish presidency, denied working against the road tax and labeled Fontenot’s letter an insult to any who have what they consider legitimate disagreement with Fontenot’s point of view.
Gautreau took Fontenot’s critique in stride, labeling much of his dissatisfaction evasive maneuvering to keep from answering hard questions from here about how money is spent, saying she has seen enough and has no plan to seek another term.
Parish government observers expect Fontenot in the foreseeable future to renew the effort for a parish-wide public library system.
Where Ardoin, Gautreau and other council members will fall on that issue remains to be answered.
The parish is the only one of Louisiana’s 64 without such a system.
