As we celebrate this Memorial Day amid argument over the proper role and place of statues and symbols, it might be useful to remember that the day was first meant to honor the Civil War dead.

Lee Earl Aucoin’s name is among the names inscribed on one of the monuments at the Veterans Memorial brick-courtyard, located at Park Avenue and South 2nd Street in Eunice.
Aucoin’s name is also associated with VFW Post 8971, Doucet-Aucoin, in Eunice.
Irma Darphin, of Iota, is one of the last World War II Army nurses in the state. She helped to treat soldiers injured in the Battle of the Bulge.

A shy young girl from south Louisiana never thought she’d make so many friends or travel so far from home and perform a role in World War II.
A Memorial Day Service will be held at 5 p.m. Monday at the corner of Park Avenue and 2nd Street in Eunice.
There will be a flag raising ceremony. prayer and Pledge of Allegiance.
